Meet David Oliveira
David grew up in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos watching his mother and grandmother embroider a wide range of patterns and motifs — a craft that stayed with him even while he studied architecture in Porto and Oslo. Time away, and contact with other realities, made him value Madeira's natural and cultural heritage even more. In 2021, he came home and started Bailha, bringing together bordadeiras who've kept the island's embroidery alive for decades, some for over 75 years. Bailha's mission is simple: value the manual work of embroidery, pay the bordadeiras fairly, and share Madeira's culture locally and globally. So instead of letting the craft fade, David now leads the team's design work while the bordadeiras — Helena da Silva, Dorina Pita and Sara — pass their stitches on, hand to hand, one workshop at a time.
